Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death the family of Ford, they were looked after by her mother, grandmother and godparents. When she was a young girl, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford was interested in the acting profession during her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she concluded that this school wasn't right for her. Ford then applied to be a student at the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among Ford's classmates. Ford graduated in 1993, but she already made a TV appearance on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate gained recognition for her stand-up comedy, which became part of her portfolio in 1996.
